Coach Cal is no Coach K!

According to AP reports, the University of Kentucky is set to offer John Calipari a lifetime contract. Are you kidding me? Just the thought of this blows me away. While I'm a huge SEC fan and love to any and all SEC teams do well, I can't believe anyone could be sold on Coach Cal for life.

I've written about Coach Cal on multiple occasions, so we won't dive into his past too much tonight, but I will look at his present. Where should we start, the sub-par team GPA; the most talented team in the country that couldn't make the final 4; losing the entire fab freshman class to the NBA draft; or how about the assist coach who can't control the bottle? What about these issues says, "life-time contract?"

Duke's Coach K has a "life-time" contract, but in comparison, his makes sense. Just look at this list of accomplishments:

Gold medal – Men's Basketball (2008 Summer Olympics)
4 NCAA Tournament Championships ('91, '92, '01, '10)
11 Final Four ('86, '88, '89, '90, '91, '92, '94, '99, '01, '04, '10)
12 ACC Tournament Championships ('86, '88, '92, '99, '00, '01, '02, '03, '05, '06, '09, '10)
12 ACC Regular Season Championships ('86, '91, '92, '94, '97, '98, '99, '00, '01, '04, '06, '10)

Now let's look at our ole buddy Coach Cal:

C-USA Tournament Championship ('06, '07, 2008-vacated, '09)
C-USA Regular Season Championship ('04, '06, '07, 2008-vacated, '09)
NIT Championship (2002)
A-10 Tournament Championship ('92, '93, '94, '95, '96)
A-10 Regular Season Championship ('92, '93, '94, '95, '96)
SEC Regular Season Championship (2010)
SEC Tournament Championship (2010)

Do we even need to discuss the difference between the ACC and the C-USA and A-10 conferences? I didn't think so.

Here's the bottom line - Coach K is one of the most respected people if the entire coaching profession. Coach Cal has had a few good years and is on everyone's watch list for the next big NCAA probation hearing. Again I ask, what about this guy says "life-time" contract?

I know; I know...Cal is the hottest coach on the planet right now, I can't argue that. I can't even argue that he's not a good coach; but I can argue that UK has all but admitted that "winning" is way more important than integrity, honesty, and developing people. Duke and Coach K have openly embraced these ideals and guess what? They won the National Championship...Hmmm.
