SEC Players of the Week - Week 4

 

OFFENSIVE

 

CAM NEWTON

• Newton completed 16-of-21 passes for 158 yards and two

touchdowns and rushed for a team-high 176 yards on 25 carries

and three touchdowns in Auburn's 35-27 win over #12/15

South Carolina.

• Newton accounted for 334 yards of total offense and five

touchdowns. Of his 46 offensive plays, only six did not gain

any yardage and only one lost yardage.

• 11 of his 25 rushing attempts were for first downs and also

threw for eight first downs, making him responsible for 19 of

Auburn's 29 first downs in the game.

• Newton is the first quarterback in school history to throw for

two or more TDs in the first four games this season. He is also

the only player in the SEC this season to have two 170+ rushing

yardage performances.

• Lester recorded seven total tackles (five solos) and a career-high

two interceptions in Alabama's 24-20 win at #10/11

Arkansas.

• Lester's second interception of the game came at the 4:40

mark in the fourth quarter at the Arkansas 45-yard line and

was returned 33 yards to the Arkansas 12-yard line to set up

the Tide's game-winning touchdown.

• His first interception of the game was in the second quarter

in the endzone to stop an Arkansas drive.

• The Alabama defense held Arkansas to 15 points under its

season average (35.3 points) with just three coming in the

second half.

• Lester's four interceptions leads the SEC and tied for second

in the NCAA.

PATRICK PETERSON

• Peterson returned a punt 60 yards for a touchdown and partially

blocked a field goal in LSU's 20-14 win over #22/21 West

Virginia.

• He also had a 26-yard punt return that gave LSU possession

at the WVU 37-yard line.

• The 60-yard punt return for a score came in the second quarter

and gave LSU a 17-0 lead.

• Peterson's partially blocked field goal came in the first quarter

on a 28-yard attempt.

• Peterson had one tackle on defense as LSU held West

Virginia to just 177 yards of total offense.

• He leads the SEC with 28.1 yards per punt return and

became the first Tiger to have multiple punt returns for a TD

since 2003 (had 87-yarder for TD against North Carolina).

OFFENSIVE LINEMAN

 

DEREK SHERROD

• Sherrod helped pave the way for Mississippi State to gain

314 total offensive yards and gave up no sacks in the

Bulldogs' 24-12 win against Georgia.

• The Bulldog offensive line controlled the second half, with

five drives lasting a total of 19:21.

• Three of the five second-half drives went for 10-plays or

more, all lasting more than five minutes of clock. In the two

other drives, one was a touchdown and the other ran out the

clock.

• The Bulldog offense has eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark

in all four games this season and 15 of the last 16 contests.

MIKE BLANC

• Blanc recorded a season-best seven total tackles (three

solos) and one fumble recovery in Auburn's 35-27 win over

#12/15 South Carolina.

• Blanc's fumble recovery led to a touchdown drive in the

fourth quarter that gave the Tigers a 35-27 lead.

• He helped lead an Auburn defensive line that held South

Carolina to just 79 yards rushing, 119 yards below the

Gamecocks season average (198.3).

 

FRESHMAN

 

TREY BURTON

Quarterback / Wide Receiver

FLORIDA

6-2 • 222 • Venice, Fla.

 

• Burton scored an SEC freshman record six total touchdowns

in Florida's 48-14 win against Kentucky.

• The six scores are one shy of the national freshman record

and the SEC single-game record of seven.

• Burton surpassed the Florida record for most touchdowns in

a single game, topping Tim Tebow's mark of five set in 1997.

• Burton scored touchdowns on all five of his rushing

attempts (40 yards total) and caught an 11-yard TD pass as

well.

• He was 1-for-1 passing for 42 yards and caught five passes

for 37 yards.

SEC Players of the Week - Week 3

SEC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

RYAN MALLETT
Quarterback

• Mallett completed 21-of-33 passes for 380 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions in Arkansas' 31-24 win at Georgia.
• He engineered a three-play touchdown drive with just 47 seconds left to play, which was capped by his 40-yard TD pass to Greg Childs with 15 seconds remaining.
• Mallett's TD passes were from 57, 22 and 40 yards.  His 57-yard scoring pass to Chris Gragg in the first quarter was Mallett's eighth scoring throw of 50-or-more yards in 16 games at Arkansas.
• The 380-yard passing total was the second highest total ever for an Arkansas quarterback in a road game and the most for a Razorback in an SEC road opener.
• In the third quarter, had a 43-yard punt for his first collegiate punt.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

• Bynes registered a game-high 11 total tackles, including two for losses (-6 yards) and a pass deflection in Auburn's 27-24 overtime win against Clemson.
• His 11 tackles against Clemson are the most by an Auburn player this season.
• He was part of an Auburn defense that held Clemson 24 points below its season average and just 147 yards and seven points in second half.
• The effort was Bynes' fifth career double-digit tackle effort and most since recording 12 against West Virginia in 2009
• Bynes leads Auburn in tackles (23) and is tied for ninth in SEC.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

• Jasper set an LSU record, one shy of tying the SEC mark, with five field goals in the 29-7 win over Mississippi State.
• He kicked four field goals in the first half and then followed with one in the second half .
• Jasper's field goals were from 44, 32, 51, and 37 in the first half and 21-yards in the second half.
• He finished the game with 17 total points, tying the school-record for points in a game by a kicker.
• He ran his streak of consecutive made field goals to seven straight.
• Jasper also punted once for 39-yards, which was downed on the Mississippi State 5-yard line and also had a touchback on a kickoff.  The Bulldogs' average starting field position was its own 18 yard line.

OFFENSIVE LINEMAN OF THE WEEK

• The first-year starting left tackle contributed six knockdown blocks and played every offensive snap, helping Vanderbilt to a 28-14 road win over Ole Miss.
• Johnson provided key blocks on two long Commodore touchdown rushes - an 80-yarder by Warren Norman and 35-yarder by Zac Stacy. Norman's score tied the team's second longest rush ever.
• The Vanderbilt offense amassed 217 rushing yards, its highest total against an SEC opponent since gaining 239 against Kentucky on Nov. 10, 2007.  
• The victory ended a 10-game conference losing streak for the Commodores. It also marked Robbie Caldwell's first win as a head coach.

• Nevis is the SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week for the second straight week.  He set a career-high with 9 tackles, including 1.5 tackles for losses, in LSU's 29-7 win over Mississippi State.
• He intercepted the first pass of his career in the third quarter deep in MSU territory, which led to an LSU touchdown and a 26-7 lead three plays later.
• He anchored a defense that limited Mississippi State to just 268 total yards and one that forced five turnovers.
• LSU held its second straight SEC opponent scoreless in the first half and the Tigers have allowed just 10 points in its first two conference games, the fewest points in the first two league games by LSU since the 2004 season.

FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK

• Jenkins matched his career-high with six tackles (two solos) in Florida's 31-17 win at Tennessee.
• He recorded his first career sack at Tennessee, which came on a 2nd-and-15 at the UT 11 in the fourth quarter and put the Vols at its own 1-yard line.
• Jenkins also had six total tackles in Week 2 against South Florida.
• For the season, Jenkins has 15 total tackles, which is third among all SEC freshmen.

SEC Players of the week - Week 2

• In his first career SEC game, Lattimore rushed for 182 yards on 37 carries and scored the game's only two TDs in South Carolina's 17-6 win over Georgia.  The 37 carries is a school freshman record and the 182 yards rushing was the most by a Gamecock since 2000.

• Richardson totaled 207 all-purpose yards in Alabama's 24-3 win over Penn State.  He tallied 144 rushing yards on 22 carries and a TD and also caught four passes for 46 yards and had a 17-yard kickoff return.

• Fairley accounted for five total tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss (-10 yards), an interception , a fumble recovery and three quarterback pressures in Auburn's 17-14 win at Mississippi State.
• 1.5 of his tackles for loss were sacks for minus 6 yards. 
• The Auburn defense held Mississippi State to 117 yards rushing and 246 yards of total offense.
• Fairley is the first Tiger since Karibi Dede in 2005 to record a fumble recovery and an interception in an SEC game (vs. Arkansas).

• He also rushed for career-high 139 yards on 11 carries and a 62-yard TD run and caught a 21-yard pass as well.
• His 255 all-purpose yards is the highest this season in the SEC as well as his 54-yard kickoff return.
• Demps has the longest rushing play (72 yards vs. Miami) and the longest kickoff return in the SEC this season.

• Pouncey has a key block in Jeff Demps' 62-yard touchdown run.
• For the season, the Gator offensive line has allowed just one sack and averaging 7.9 yards per rush.
